What Keeps People Poor? Learnings from the Family 100 Project

SACOSS is thrilled to announce Dame Diane Robertson DNZM will be visiting Adelaide in early May to share her extensive knowledge of the eight key drivers that keep people trapped in poverty.  This event draws on extensive research from the Auckland City Mission Family 100 Project and is a must for anyone working in service delivery within the health and community sector in South Australia.

The Family 100 Research Project is a ground-breaking collaborative study undertaken by the Auckland City Mission in conjunction with a group of researchers from Waikato University, Massey University and the University of Auckland. It is born out of the belief that a more constructive dialogue about the plight of people living in poverty is best be achieved by hearing directly from the people who live in those circumstances.

Over a twelve-month period the researchers worked with 100 families who were long-term users of the Mission’s foodbank in order to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experience of families living in poverty.

The Family 100 Project clearly highlights the plight of those living in poverty in their own words, and defines the eight key drivers that keep people locked into a state of constant financial hardship – debt, justice, housing, employment, health, food insecurity, support services and education.

Dame Diane Robertson will talk about how participants outlined the way a wide range of factors work in concert to keep families trapped in a state of financial hardship. 

About Dame Diane Robertson
Dame Diane Robertson is a New Zealand community leader and was the head of the Auckland City Mission from 1998 up until December 2015. She was the first woman and first non-cleric to hold the role, and was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the community in the Queen’s 2015 Birthday Honours. She was also awarded The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, in recognition of the contribution made to New Zealand life.

Community Sector, listen up to those who have lived it!

How do we know whether we are really providing a good community service or whether it’s just more paternalism? 

This event is an opportunity for community sector workers to hear bold insights from low income people about how we can improve our services and support their efforts to empower themselves.

Keeping Children Safe, Together | A Child Protection Symposium

SACOSS, CAFWA-SA, SNAICC and DECD, in conjunction with the Australian Centre for Child Protection present ‘Keeping Children Safe, Together’, a Symposium on the state of the Current Child Protection System in South Australia.

Child protection is everyone’s business – we can keep children safe, together

By working collaboratively, professionals who engage with families and adults in other contexts, as well as those who already work in child protection, can refocus on the needs of vulnerable children and make a difference in their lives.

Attendance at the Symposium is a must for senior social service and child protection workers, with the program aimed at middle to senior management staff within DECD, staff of government agencies, staff of non-government organisations working in child protection, mental health, homelessness, youth services and drug and alcohol services, academics working in relevant fields, as well as foster families and kinship carers.

Consumer Engagement in Energy and Water Regulation Conference

Consumers belong at the heart of the processes for defining regulated services and service levels, and the prices that are paid for the provision of those services. It is essential for customers to know that the bills they are paying are fair and that they guarantee valued services. Effective consumer engagement is vital to achieving this.

The Conference will feature international keynote speaker Stephen Littlechild, former Director General of Electricity Supply in the UK. Stephen is internationally recognised for his contributions on energy and water consumer engagement in regulation, and is a Fellow at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge and Emeritus Professor, University of Birmingham.

Resilience : A program in Leading Resilient Team Cultures
