Decriminalisation of abortion

SACOSS together with 31 other health, legal and community organisations, have joined together to calling on members of the South Australian parliament to be on the right side of history, and vote in support of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2020, which decriminalises abortion. The Bill is also supported by Australian Medical Association (SA), which has written its own letter to MPs on this important topic.

South Australia’s current abortion laws are no longer fit for purpose. They delay and complicate patient care, increase patient distress, and disproportionately harm members of the community who already face barriers to accessing healthcare. The Bill promotes the autonomy, dignity and wellbeing of patients who need to end a pregnancy - by providing a pathway to a more compassionate reproductive healthcare system for South Australians.
