STAND UP FOR CONCESSIONS REFORM

    Concessions are discounts on essential services, provided by the South Australian Government, to support people living on low incomes to meet their basic needs. However, the concessions system creates poverty premiums and puts up barriers to access – stopping some people getting the concessions support they need. 

     

    Who are we? 

    The South Australian Council of Social Service (SACOSS) believes that a strong social services sector has a key role to play in creating fair and just communities. That’s why we’ve been fighting for justice, opportunity, and shared wealth for all South Australians – since 1946.  

     

    What are we fighting for? 

    We’re turning our advocacy and policy know-how towards the concessions system. Concessions are a key support for low-income South Australians, including:

     

    • Energy bill subsidies - helping to keep the lights on 
    • Public transport discounts - so people can get where they need to go 
    • Cost of living concession - assisting people to meet their basic living costs 
    • Discounts on ambulance cover – the buffer system to make sure an emergency trip to hospital does not disadvantage people living on low incomes 

     

    However, the system is broken. Right now, some people who should be able to access state government concessions are missing out on key supports.
