20,000 more households to get help with energy: SACOSS applauds government’s decision to extend audit scheme

SACOSS has welcomed the State Government’s announcement today to expand the Retailer Energy Efficiency Scheme, which should see approximately 20,000 extra households eligible for free home energy audits.

“Before the election SACOSS had called for an expansion of the REES to help 'the working poor’ so we applaud this decision,” says Jo De Silva, SACOSS Senior Policy Adviser in Energy.

“This was one of several policies the Liberal Party promised to fulfil, so we are really pleased they have gone even further than our original proposal.”

“Now anyone on a retailer payment plan can access a free energy audit through their energy retailer. Previously this had more limited access for those on a concession or a hardship program.”

“Anyone with an energy bill debt can ask to be put on a payment plan.”

“Energy audits are a critical means to reduce energy bills as they help identify problem appliances and behaviour modifications so people can take steps to manage their usage.”
