Increasing access to the home battery scheme for rentals

The South Australian government through the Department for Energy and Mining sought views on making the Home Battery Scheme accessible to renters and landlords. SACOSS is supportive of access to technologies such as solar PV for rental households to reduce energy bills, however our research indicates that it is not a clear or simple proposition what benefits would accrue for a tenant or landlord with the addition of batteries to a household solar system. SACOSS recommends further research is conducted before implementing a broader program to install batteries on rental households and we note that high energy costs may be better reduced through other energy efficiency measures, as well as targeting the high cost of water heating in housing.
