Post Budget Treasurer's Breakfast 2022

Join us for the annual Post Budget Breakfast with the Treasurer, where you will will hear from the Hon. Stephen Mullighan MP discuss his first Budget as the State's Treasurer.

The SA State Budget will be handed down on Thursday 2nd June. SACOSS will be hosting our 12th annual post budget breakfast with the Treasurer and warmly invite our members and friends to join us for breakfast on Wednesday 8th June, from 7am. 

At this breakfast the State Treasurer, the Hon. Stephen Mullighan MP will discuss the newly elected State Government’s first State Budget of their term, followed by a panel of sector experts who will discuss what it means for our sector and the people it supports.

Hon. Stephen Mullighan MP
Treasurer

Stephen was appointed Treasurer in the Labor Government in March 2022. He was first elected as the Member for Lee in the South Australian Parliament in 2014. In 2014, he was appointed the Minister for Transport & Infrastructure, and in 2016 added the portfolios of Housing and Urban Development. 

Prior to entering the Parliament, Stephen led Deloitte’s economics team in Adelaide between 2010-2013 providing economic advice to corporate clients, the non-profit sector and state and federal governments. Stephen is a proud western suburb resident, is married to Antonia and they have three children Benjamin, Isaac and Olivia.

Along with his responsibility as Treasurer, his portfolio responsibilities include Finance.

Natalie Wade
Equality Lawyers

Natalie Wade is a prominent disability rights lawyer and advocate. As the Founder and Principal Lawyer of Equality Lawyers, Natalie is a leader in providing premium legal advice and representation to people with disabilities and their families. In 2016, Natalie was awarded Australian Young Lawyer of the Year and South Australian Young Lawyer of the Year in recognition of her work on law reform projects that advanced the rights of people with disabilities and commitment to diversity in the legal profession. Natalie provides an authentic and professional on disability rights issues in Australia. 

 

 

Mark Henley
Uniting Communities

Mark Henley has worked in the SA Community services sector for nearly 45 years and is a life member of both SACOSS and Youth Affairs Council of SA. During all of these years he has been an active advocate for improving the lives of marginal and excluded people and their communities.

For the last 22 years Mark has been employed by Uniting Communities as their Manager of Advocacy and has advocated on a wide range of issues, including affordable housing, gambling reform, essential service access and affordability and more recently overcoming loneliness. He is also current President of the Economics Society of SA and has been to more budget lockups than just about anyone else in the community sector.

And to indicate that there can be life outside of the Community Sector, Mark grows rare and usual fruit and is a passionate Crows supporter.

 

 

Fran Baum 

Professor Fran Baum AO is a public health social scientist with a special interest in creating healthy, equitable and sustainable societies. She is a professor of health equity, The Stretton Institute, The University of Adelaide, Australia.

From 2009-2021 she was a Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor and Director of the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity ant Flinders University.

She received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her public health service. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and of the Australian Health Promotion Association.

She is a past National President and Life Member of the Public Health Association of Australia.

 

 

Cheryl Axleby

Cheryl is a proud Narungga Woman, passionate about improving the quality of life for her people. Cheryl has worked with the Aboriginal community, Federal Govt and South Australian Government sectors throughout a career spanning over 40 years.  Cheryl has extensive experience in working within the Aboriginal community sector, law and justice, human rights, women's issues, Aboriginal family violence, youth justice, child and youth & family services, Closing the Gap and the Uluru Statement of the Heart.

Cheryl is the National Co-chair of Change the Record, the only Aboriginal led Justice Coalition in Australia and is the Relationship Manager for SA for Aboriginal Community Housing Limited.

Just like Martin Luther King, Cheryl too has a dream. A dream where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are treated with respect and dignity, enjoy a life without racism, enjoy a longer life expectancy, have real jobs, live a life without poverty, have stable and affordable housing, access to quality education, and are empowered to make their own decisions and are properly acknowledged and respected as the First Nations peoples of Australia.
