People at Risk in Emergencies: Priority Setting Forum

SACOSS is holding a forum to identify the priority risks, issues or populations to be addressed in the 2nd People at Risk in Emergencies Implementation Plan for South Australia.

In March 2018, the state-wide People at Risk in Emergencies Framework was finalised, which outlined how government agencies, local government, and the non-government sector can all work together to improve the safety and wellbeing of those most at risk during and following disasters. Funded under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program, the Framework highlighted the importance of strengthening the relationships between these groups to allow for information sharing, access to government resources, and greater sharing of responsibility for emergency preparedness.

We know that climate events and disasters do not impact everyone equally. Our ability to adapt, prepare and recover from climate disasters and other emergencies is influenced by many factors including age, location, health, disability, language and literacy, location, poverty and social networks.

The project therefore aimed to:

  • reduce the impacts of disasters on potentially vulnerable people; and
  • build the resilience of people at risk in an emergency through the activities of government, the non-government sector, and the community.

SACOSS and Australian Red Cross partnered to operationalise the Framework through an Implementation Plan which outlines high level initiatives identified through consultation to improve the readiness, safety, and wellness of those who are most at risk in emergencies. While some of the Implementation Plan’s actions have already been implemented to date, much has changed over the past few years. SACOSS and Australian Red Cross would therefore value your input as a key stakeholder to help identify priority population groups, issues or risks that should be addressed across the next two years, towards a refreshed People at Risk in Emergencies Implementation Plan and the development of a renewed engagement approach/action team to drive the work.

You are therefore invited to join us for an in person forum on Thursday 1 September, 2022 in Adelaide, from 1:30-4:30pm, or join us for an online forum on 2 September from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
