Motivations and transitions: targeting housing assistance to best support tenant outcomes

This event will explore the motivations and outcomes for tenants navigating the terrain of public housing and the private rental system with particular interest in the incentives, opportunities, issues and disincentives for participation in the workforce.

The Federation Review White Paper has placed the productivity agenda at the centre of the future roles and responsibilities of the federal and state governments. The McClure Review of welfare asks how to remove barriers to workforce participation created through housing assistance. The Productivity Commission have just published Housing Assistance and Employment in Australia focussed on the links between participation in employment with housing assistance, social housing and Commonwealth Rent Assistance.

Join us as we use the latest AHURI research to explore housing assistance and the motivations and experiences of tenants to better understand how to target assistance, achieve sustainable tenancies and support employment outcomes.

The research examines what motivates people to leave social housing, how they fare when they do, and what assistance can be put in place to sustain people in private rental tenancies. This is particularly interesting in the context of the productivity agenda and employment.

The event will draw on research by Dr Ilan Wiesel (AHURI Research Centre—University of NSW) on Social housing exits: analysing incidence, motivations and consequences, and Dr Wendy Stone (AHURI Research Centre—Swinburne University of Technology) Sustaining private rental tenancies: targeted tenant support across life events and housing transitions.

This important event will give your organisation a unique opportunity to join the discussion about this topical and critical issue in Australia.
