How to read the State Budget: A pre-budget training session for the community sector

SACOSS is hosting an information session in the lead up to the State Budget on 7 July to assist those in the community sector navigate the budget papers. The session will not discuss specific policy issues, but will teach attendees how to find the details they're looking for within the papers themselves.

In this two hour session, SACOSS’ Senior Policy staff will take people through:

  • What happens on Budget Day (the lock-up, the speech, the media circus, and SACOSS’ sector briefing and [in]famous Budget Snapshot)
  • How to read the budget papers
    • The structure of the papers
    • Where to find the things you want
    • How to read the numbers (actuals, budget, forward estimates, real v nominal values)
    • What you won’t find in the papers
  • How to find out more information or complain
    • What is the Budget Estimates Committee and how can you have input

This training session is designed for community sector workers with limited or no experience of budget papers, but who want to understand or find particular things in the State Budget.
