Consumer Price Index - September Quarter

Nationally the inflation rate, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, was 1.8% in the September Quarter, making an annual rate of 7.3%. In Adelaide it was higher at 2.6% for the quarter, and 8.4% for the year.

The most significant price rises in Adelaide were for food and energy, with food prices reflecting national increases but with electricity and gas price increases well above the national averages in both the September Quarter and over the year.

While the increase in energy prices is alarming, the national comparison hides some very big differences between states. Electricity prices increased by 25% in Sydney, 30% in Hobart, but decreased massively in Perth (after previous large rises).
