Food Insecurity
and Financial Literacy
Project

SACOSS is currently working on a Food Insecurity and Financial Literacy Project, which has as one of its projected outcomes the detailed mapping of community sector initiatives that deal with these important issues. This work is being supported by the South Australian Department of Health.

It is envisaged that the resulting maps will prove a valuable tool for a more coordinated response by the community and government sectors that avoids unnecessary duplication.

To this end, the following information is being sought for the mapping of food security and financial literacy programs in South Australia.

• The address details of all programs that deal with either (or both) issues, with at least street names and numbers, and post codes.

• Programs broken down into  either Food Security (FS) or Financial Literacy (FL) and the following sub groups:

• Emergency Relief (ER) programs: food banks, food vouchers, bill payment assistance, etc.

• Prepared meals for the disadvantaged, such as provision of meals at shelters or other supported accommodation and  those based on other models such as  Meals on Wheels

• Programs run through schools and pre-schools, including:
• Breakfast programs
• Lunch programs
• Morning tea/recess programs

• Intermediate Programs: ER that incorporates follow-up component and bulk buying/shopping/food co-ops.

• Capacity building programs such as
• Cooking classes
• Community gardens and urban agriculture projects
• Financial literacy/capability programs such as Money Minded
