The rising cost of living, particularly the cost of basic necessities, is an increasingly important issue in South Australia and has a real and detrimental impact on those who can least afford it. The SACOSS Cost of Living Summit 2011 was an invitation-only event bringing together over 100 leading thinkers and practitioners from business, university, government and the community sector to generate policy ideas on the key cost of living issues. The aim was to gain consensus on a number of key policy initiatives at federal government, state government and community levels that will have a substantive effect on cost of living pressures. The Summit addreseds the issues covered by SACOSS’s quarterly Cost of Living reports: housing, utilities, food, income (minimum wage and income support), health costs, and transport. Workshops on each topic will consider the key drivers of rising prices and the best policy response. This was not a standard conference. It was a working summit with the goal of reaching agreement on key policy initiatives. A summit Report will be released after the event.
